"Before you play two notes learn how to play one note - and don't play one note
unless you've got a reason to play it." - Mark Hollis (1998)
Welcome to Within Without - a website dedicated to the music of Mark Hollis
and Talk Talk. These pages are not fan pages with lots of pictures and fancy
graphics. Neither are the pages for record collectors who want a complete discography with
scanned images of even the slightest variation in the covers.
The primary subject on these pages is the music and the references behind it. Talk
Talk made five albums during the years 1982 to 1991. During these years Talk Talk
progressed from being a modest synthpop group to make truly unique music of immense
beauty. Talk Talk searched territories where no other band had been before. The
music on the last albums is impossible to categorize in the traditonal genres. It contains
elements of modern classical music and freeform jazz as well as rock. In my opinion only
the last three albums are genuine masterpieces. I rarely listen to the first two. The
first solo album of Talk Talk frontman Mark Hollis was released January 26,
1998.
I hope you'll enjoy what I've collected on these pages. Any comment or suggestion will be
very welcome. Just send me an e-mail.
Happy reading,
