ISBN: 87-12-02067-2

****   Hard cover. 408 pp. Numerous colour photographs, sketches, and flight silhuettes. A good treatise covering the birds of prey of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Contains detailed and up-to-date information on all aspects of raptor biology. A great drawback is the negative view on falconry somewhat coloured by animal rights philosophy the author shares with most other danish ornithologists, and which is expressed throughout the book. I believe the book has been translated to several other languages, though I have no information on such translations. Many fine photographs. Sketches and flight silhuettes of all species covered.     Jakob Borch

****   Hard cover. 279 pp. 40 colour plates, 53 figures and 60 tables. Coloured plates by Graeme Arnott and sketches by Robert Davies. Most comprehensive study of the Verreaux's Eagle.

"This well-written and well-illustrated book presents the results of a monumental 20-yr study of the life history of the black eagle... This study ranks up there with other great single-species studies such as those by Margaret Morse Nice on the song sparrow and Ian Newton and colleagues on the Eurasian sparrowhawk... chock full of information... nicely illustrated... This book is so attractive that it could easily be misconstrued as just another coffee table book. But it is much more than that... will serve as a model for single-species monographs. The Black Eagle is a must for all serious raptor biologists...     William S. Clark, J. Raptor Res., 28:277-278

Saker falcon

Ellis, David H.
What is Falco altaicus Menzbier?
Article in: Journal of Raptor Research; vol. 29 (1995); issue 1; pp. 15-25

****   ABSTRACT: The systematics of the Altay falcon (falco altaicus/lorenzi) remains enigmatic. First reported in 1811, it has been treated as a gyrfalcon (F. rusticolus), a saker (F. cherrug), and two separate species (F. lorenzi) and F. altaicus). Of 53 "altaicus" specimens examined at least two are misidentifies gyrfalcons, have red, brown, and gray color morphs. The red (backed) morph closely resembles some eastern sakers; the chocolate and gray morphs resemble respective gyrfalcon morphs. While the true affinities of the Altay falcon will be sesolved by molecular genetics, the ecological, geographical, and morphological information suggest that the core group represents a gyrfalcon-saker cross that is being swamped through back crosses with the saker. The breeding range of the core group. (i.e. the Altay and Sayan Mountains) is much smaller than previously reported.

'The research as presented in this volume proves conclusively that peregrine falcons as a species are not now nor ever were in the least endangered... The publication of this book highlights a contemporary wildlife-research paradox. The endangered listing of peregrine falcons was openly exploited through all manner of publicity for twenty years as a fundraiser by the Peregrine Fund and (in Canada) by World Wildlife Fund for peregrine research, which has now proved the listing should never have been made... is interesting and informative reading when read with the kind of scepticism that separates science from advocacy, of which latter there is plenty, deliberately and skillfully blended... The editors do insist on having the last word on anything controversial, thus chiding and then correcting the British European dissenting view concerning the chemicals aldrin, dieldrin, and heptachlor.'   F. L. Beebe, 'The Compleat Falconer'
