Directions for the keeping of raptors and owls in captivity


Raptors and owls must be kept in aviaries made in welded wire-net or the like. At least one corner must be protected, so that both the adjacent walls and the adjacent part of the ceiling is made by non-transparent material.

The aviary must be equipped with at least two seats, of which one must be sheltered. The seats should be on natural branches of varying shape and thickness. One of the seats should be placed in at least 2 m height.

At the floor of the aviary there should be a large rock, for the birds to sharpen their beaks.

There should be possibility for dustbathing on a daily basis (dust/soil must be preferred for sand.) Furthermore there should be possibility for bathing on a daily basis in a tub of a diameter of at least the same size as the bird's half wingspan.

The aviary must have the following minimal measures:

 Small falcons, sparrowhawk and owls
 Large falcons, eagle owl, kite and goshawk
 Eagles and vultures
