CONCLUSION
The effect of the use of trained peregrine falcons for scaring away birds at FSN Aalborg has been very effective indeed.
How we explain that:
- The 19/8 there was approx. 3000 at the field. These we tried to scare away for 45 min. together with the gull-hunter, but without luck. Instead we put up the falcon, and within approx. 10 min the field was cleared of birds.
- The same happens in very hard weather, with rain and wind, here the falcon works very efficiently too.
Generally we must say that the falcons are able to keep the birds gathered in flocks and gets them out of the area without they are dispersed all over the area. The 3 falcons used in the experiment, 1 male and 2 females, was not similar in size, and thus did not have same effect, as the size of the falcon is of importance in how/when the birds react. Flying falcons in a period, will demand more of them. This will depend on how many hours there will be flown daily, as it is birds of prey who must be fed and then rest until they have cast, and in this period of approx. 12 hours the falcon cannot be flown.
With regard to the experimental period we can recommend the use of trained peregrine falcons for scaring away birds at FSN Aalborg, as we believe that it will be a major advantage/help for FSN, in periods with many birds, and decrease the risk of bird-strikes
