Physical Characteristics:

Size: Large
Build:
Weight: Females: 4.05 - 5.7 kg, Males: 3.5 - 4.4 kg
Wings and tail: Wings long and broad. Tail longer than the head and neck.
Wingspan: 204-220 cm
Colours: Dark brown in the distance. Looking closer, one sees that the deckfeathers are darker than the primaries and tailfeathers, which are brightly barred with a darker band at the edge.
Voice: Very silent, but occasionally: vei-ah and kiek .

Easily confused with: White-tailed sea-eagle, steppe-eagle, imperial eagle, rough-legged buzzard.


Range: A. c. chrysaëtos: Europe except: Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Ireland, England, Denmark and the Benelux countries. A. c. canadensis: North America. A. c. homeyeri: Iberian mainland, Northern Africa, the Middle East, Iran, Kaukasus. A. c. daphanea: Turkestan, Manchuria, Southeast China. A. c. kamtschatica: Altai and eastwards. A. c. japonica : Japan and Korea

Population: Increasing or stable populations in its entire breeding range, except Greece, Georgia, Rumania and Bulgaria where populations are decreasing a little. Became almost extinct in the 19th and early 20th century because of shooting and poisoning.

Migration: Generally speaking the old birds don't migrate and the young do.

Habitat: Lives mainly in mountaineous country, but also on cliffs at the coast and in large moist forests.
