How big is the drag on Your rocket - is it stable - can it fly backwards? Check out the conditions at Your favourite launching area. What kind of weather is it?, and how are the winds - are they going to significantly affect the trajectory?.

Atmosphere Models
Every student of aerodynamics and flight mechanics is introduced to an atmosphere table, which allows one to determine the temperature, pressure, and density at any altitude. If you don't happen to have such a table handy, you may use this sample atmosphere table. This page enables the computation of MSIS parameters for user-selected times and locations. The available parameters are neutral temperature, densities (He, O, N2, O2, Ar, H, N) and total density. The MSISE model describes the neutral temperature and densities in Earth's atmosphere from ground to thermospheric heights. Below 72.5 km the model is primarily based on the MAP Handbook (Labitzke et al., 1985) tabulation of zonal average temperature and pressure by Barnett and Corney, which was also used for the CIRA-86. Below 20 km these data were supplemented with averages from the National Meteorological Center (NMC). In addition, pitot tube, falling sphere, and grenade sounder rocket measurements from 1947 to 1972 were taken into consideration. The COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere (CIRA) provides empirical models of atmospheric temperatures and densities as recommended by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR). The lower part (0-120 km) of CIRA-86 consists of tables of the monthly mean values of temperature and zonal wind with almost global coverage (80N - 80S). |

Atmosphere Profiles
COST WIND INITIATIVE FOR A NETWORK DEMONSTRATION IN EUROPE - C.W.I.N.D.E InfoMet by Universitat de Barcelona Atmospheric soundings. Vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, and winds in the atmosphere are taken twice daily at the same times at sites across the world. University of Wyoming, college of engineering, Department of Atmospheric Science This page allows you to set up pages for MAPS, RUC-2, Profiler, RAOB, or ACARS soundings, either as a java-based plots, or as text.
