| WCFHL - FINANCIAL CRISIS An Investigation by the Ottawa Foreign Press, Where Local Matters Are Our Main Concern and Foreign Ones Dont Matter At All. |
There is a saying in the World Of Sports, you win some, you lose some, and hardly ever will any team always win. In fact, the only team, in the 4 professional North American Sports, that has gone through an unbeaten regular and postseason record is the Miami Dolphins. And they only had to go 16-0 in the regular season, they didnt have to deal with an 82 game NHL Schedule. Whats my point? Good question, since it has nothing to do with an unbeaten record, but it has to do with losing a lot of something else. That something else is the dire fact that many WCFHL teams will be going bankrupt sooner than later. There are 30 WCFHL teams, and out of the 30, there are 12 teams that have projected balances of $1 million dollars or less. Most of these teams are already in a struggle to make the playoffs and the bitter fact that they will have no money left come seasons end means they are going to be even worse off come next season. On the other hand, teams like the Ottawa Senators, who are currently in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference, and have been on the way up since Gary Roberts, Dainius Zubrus and Andrei Nikolishin were acquired along with Tomas Vokoun taking over as the #1 Netminder, find themselves losing money every single day they play. The Ottawa faithful are so impressed by their 30-19-8-1 record, along with being 8th overall on the Power Play, 9th overall in Team Scoring, and Tied for 1st overall in Team Defence, that a whopping 11,973 fans show up per game. In case you were wondering, the Corel Centre in Kanata, Ontario where the Sens play their home games, holds 18,407 fans per game. So, the Sens are on pace to lose $5.5 million dollars this season even though they are a good team. A team that has beaten many other good teams on their way as well. This though is a WCFHL Problem. If the team wins, if the team is competitive, and the team doesnt make money, what incentive do team owners have to invest in their guys. The Sens are going to have a sell off at seasons end. Word is their 1st round pick will be available for a bid of $5 Million dollars, their 2nd rounder will be available for $3.5 million and the rest of their picks from round 3 on can be bundled and sold for $3 million dollars as well. This is the only way the Sens can get out of bankruptcy and still field a competitive team next season. Sens management has done nothing wrong this season, Ticket prices were reduced to bring fans in, instead, attendance stayed the same. Team Management acquired necessary offense in Roberts, Zubrus, Nikolishin and the promotion of Weiss, yet attendance stayed the same. Tomas Vokoun has put up a Vezina Winning season, yet attendance stayed the same. So heres the question to the WCFHL Hierarchy, what are you going to do to help teams like the Senators out? This is Seymore Butts for the Ottawa Foreign Press, where Local Issues are our main concern. |
