When I came to Denmark I learned
to ride a bike. It was a very scary and humbling experience to learn
as an adult, but now I love it. There are cycle paths almost
everywhere and bikes have right of way. Cars wait for you… yes
really. My sister-in-law spent a day going around Copenhagen on a
bike after her knee surgery. She could not walk, but she could
cycle.
Q: Can I take my Bike on the
train/bus/Taxi?
A: Yes you can. There is a
special compartment on the trains where you can put the bike. It is
the same low entry that prams pushchairs and wheelchairs use so it
is better if you can to avoid rush hour. For a copy of the tourist
information from DSB click
here, this is available in other languages.
All taxis have a special carrier
they put on their tow bars to carry bikes.
Q: Are there specific
cycling routes?
A: In Denmark there are strict
requirements as to the signposting of cycle routes. National,
regional, and local routes are now marked in a way that makes it
easy to distinguish the routes from one another.
The national routes are
signposted with route numbers from 1-10 with white numbers on a red
square.
However, there is one exception: the signs on route 10 are green
with red numbers. The other National cycle routes are
here.
The regional route signs
look much the same as the national ones – only the numbers (16-99)
are white on a blue background.
The local route signs
look much the same as the regional ones – only the route numbers are
100-999.
Danish people all cycle from
toddlers on peddles bike to mature people who cycle well into their
mature years. I have seen a mother taking her 3 kids to school on
her bike in the snow. The bike paths are swept as quickly as the
roads.
Denmark has a lot of forests and
most are accessible to bikes. There are many marked bike route the
National ones marked with a red sign and the local one marked with
blue signs.
Q: Are you close to a
National cycle route?
My bed and breakfast is close to
the national route number 9,
click here. The other National cycle routes are
here.
Q: What is the highest hill
in Denmark?
A: Highest hill in Denmark is
only 170 m.
Q: Where can I buy guides in
English for cycle routes?
A: For a link to
buying guides in English

BIKES
Bikes are very welcome we can store them in the dry. As keen
cyclists ourselves, we will do all we can to help fellow
cyclists.
