RACING MODEL-BOATS

The Atlantic Challanger

The idea to The Atlantic challanger came when Graupner introduced their big plastic kit for the water jet driven atlantic record boat.

My Atlantic challanger is small and made in balsa wood, only 30 cm long and 8 cm wide (see size of RC2000 cell) powered by a S400 6v and 7 pcs. KAN1100,and a surface prop is from Octura.

The boat is very fast and lively on the water - fun to sail.

F1 - CAT

I have 3 different F1 cats. Two is powered by a S-400 6 V motor, a 3S LIPO pack and Graupner or Octure surface props, both is build from a drawing from the english magazine: Marine Modeling International, they are fast and easy to control on the water.

In addition I have enlarged the drawing and build a bigger F1-cat Powered by a S-600 7.2v race motor, with gearbox and 9 GP3300 cells, Prop Shop or Octure surface prop - this one is fast and unstable.....

The two cat's powered by S400 have, as you can see, different prop shafts. The one with the flexible shaft is the fastest!

For the drawing, take a look here: Traplet-Poolracer.

Brushless motor in the PoolRacer

The S400 was for some years ago a perfect motor. Cheap an quite powerful, but these days have changed, today I'm tired of replacing burned S400 - I do always want higher speed and use either too big prop or too many cells, therefore 2 - 4 trips was the average lifetime for a S400..

I want higher speed and has therefore installed a brushless motor in the PoolRacer - 400W in that boat will certainly do something for the speed.....

After test sailing ....

The Brushless setup is perfect for the model, now it really get a speed where it flies on the water like a real F1-cat. That's perfect !!....
When the weather gets warmer pictures will come.

Brushless motor in the enlarged PoolRacer

The S600 with gearbox do not that much power - the small Pool racer with brushless motor is a lot faster…. Therefore I have changed the S600 to a 3650 brushless motor, 800 - 1000W that must do something…. More to come.

A racing cat from free imagination.....

The Cat is powered by a Lehner-motor, 12 pcs. GP3300 cells, Graupner hydrospeed unit and Octura surface prop. It fly on the warter, and are very easy to flip over if the wind is wrong.

But this is fun !!.

The yellow racer

The boat is built from a drawing from the Swedish magazine: "Altt om hobby"

Homemade drive system, S-600 Race 7.2v, 9 pcs. GP3300 cells, gearbox. Surface prop from Octura or this 3 blade prop from Prop Shop

The Yellow Racer in action on a Norwegien mauntain lake.
The wind was blowing, making more than ˝ meter high waves. The boat was flying most of the time. This was fun.

WOODOO

This one is build according to a drawing from Marine Modellig International, original planned for hot car motor with gearbox running on 7 cell.

I have build the boat with a S700 9.6v Neodym, 14 cells (GP3300). This is fun !

For the drawing, take a look here: Traplet-Voodoo.

NANO CAT

The Nano Cat is a Cat made for a S-400 motor. I have build the boat from a drawing from the english magazine: Marine Modellig International.

The boat is powered by a S-480 motor and a 3P KOKAM LIPO battery pack - the S480 brush motor burned after a few trips, I will change to a brushless.
A 3200 rev/V and a 2600 rev/V brushless motor and a 50A controller is bought for testing..

For the drawing, take a look here: Traplet-Nanocat.

I love the small fast boats, take a look at - where you also can find drawings, for some small fast racingboats: Microhydros

First sailing trip

The Nano cat was sailing perfect, the picture show her at low speed.

The new motor

The new brushless motor installed in the Nano cat. KV=3200 and a 3 cell LIPO pack, 350W that will do something....

Test sailing ....

The brushless set up really makes the boat move, but the CG was to far back, therefore the model flip very easy at the high speed.

I can't move the CG forward with the motor placed where it is sitting now. I will have to change the motor/battery installation totally.

That's actually a disadvantage with the LIPO pack - it's one massive pack, when I used the NiMH battery was it possible to place each cell in different places on the boat, making a change in CG very easy…..Now I will have to rebuild the hole installation….

The rebuild Nano cat

The new brushless motor installed in the Nano cat. This time with the motor and battery changed, the battery is now in the front end of the boat, this has moved the CG forward, making a more stable model.

Test sailing ....

The new installation changed the model fully, now it is stable even with full speed - a super fast model.

DEPRON RIGGER

This Depron rigger is made from a drawing from the Swedish magazine "Altt om Hobby".
A easy to build boat, that is very light. The model is made for a small brushless motor.
I will try it with the same setup as used in the Nano Cat, maybe thats to powerfull? .... Let see what happens..

For the drawing, take a look here: Altt om Hobby.
