Born in 1910 in Fife, Scotland. Stephen Gilbert moved during the war to
Dublin where he joined the White Stag group, and exhibited several times.
After the war he moved to Paris and when he exhibited in Salon des Surindépendants
in 1948 with his abstarct and mythical expressions, he was contacted by
Asger Jorn, who introduced him to the newly founded Cobra movement.
Stephen Gilbert was exited. He joined Cobra and became a full-time member
until the movement suddenly stopped in 1951. He exhibited at both major
Cobra exhibitions (Stedelijk and Beaux-Art), he introduced his fellow
country-man William Gear and through him the german Karl Otto Götz
to Cobra, and post-Cobra he stayed in contact with among others Pierre
Alechinsky.
