Born in 1916 in Fredensborg in Denmark. Self-taught painter and ceramist.
Debuted in 1941 at the exhibition of Autumn in Copenhagen. Started as
a naturalistic painter, but soon he found a more free, expressive and
abstract style.
He got in touch with the artists that founded Linien and exhibited at
the very Cobra-like Høst exhibition in 1948, that featured many
coming Cobra artists. But he never involved deeply in Cobra. At this time
his style was a bit more concrete than abstract and with this style he
became involved in Grønningen in Denmark in 1957.
From the mid-sixties Knud Nielsen started painting the very Cobra-like
spontanious abstract canvases we know today inhabited by people and animals
in bright and colorful surroundings.
