Born in 1925 in Hengelo in Holland. Inspired by the dutch expressionism,
Theo Wolvecamp started painting only 15 years old. From 1945 until 1947
he studied at the Academy of Art in Arnhem and in 1947 he moved to Amsterdam.
In this period he gradually changed his style towards a more Miro-like
abstract symbolic style with spirals, circles and lines.
In Amsterdam he got in touch with several artists and in 1948 he were
one of the founders of Nederlandse Experimentele Group. Later that year
joined Cobra, as Nederlandse Experimentele Group became the dutch part
of the new international movement.
In 1949 he exhibited at the large Cobra exhibition at Stedelijk, but the
scandal at the third day of the exhibition did that several artists, one
of them being Theo Wolvecamp, left the group. However he shortly after
returned and then stayed until Cobra ended in 1951.
Many of his works was reproduced in the magazines Reflex, Cobra and the
german META.
Post-Cobra the painting of Theo Wolvecamp became more dramatic with whirling
explossions of colors tied up by dark outlines.
